The Dinner Game (Le Diner de Cons, a criticism for US elections)

Le Dîner de Cons (The Dinner Game) is a comedy film adapted from Francis Veber’s 1992 theater and transferred to the cinema in 1998. His works Turkish adaptations have been performed many times in our country, as the original movie: “Pierre Brochant (Thierry Lhermitte) is a successful publisher who lives in Paris. This handsome publisher had everything, playing golf with the upper class elite friends, like himself, stylish; but they haunt a different game because they get bored of the usual bourgeois habits. Five friends find every week Wednesday an “idiot” and invite them to dinner in someone’s home and make fun. Although the guests think they have been invited to an exclusive dinner because of their extraordinary interesting features, they never actually understand the truth. In the end of the evening, when the guests sent, “idiot of the week” is selected.

But that week’s dinner, while four other friends easily have an “idiot”, Pierre could not find his own. He accept the tax officer François Pignon (Jacques Villeret), whom met his friend on the train, as his “idiot”. Chunky, fat, ugly and clumsy Francois Pignon is a man constantly sweating, indiscreet but clean and pure hearted. Moreover, he builds architectural matchstick models and hopes to publish his models photo book by Pierre. However, François’ accidental mistakes turn to a disaster. In the late night, Pierre understand, he is a bigger “idiot”, as everyone has his or hers own stupid way.” (Wikipedia).

Our Dinner Game

The subject of the film has a lot of similarities with the United States Presidential elections 2016. US presidential election will be held in November, one of the former presidents wife Hillary Clinton and a real estate billionaire Donald Trump are the main candidates. They are the owner of the “dinner table”, but the dinner is being prepared for us (that connects us to the choice of the United States elections precisely on this point). Topics to be clarified:

Although US seems to have democracy, the choice is not public, capital is decisive. There is a vote, which will be directed to any address given; even any surprising scenario is already purchased. The impact of the President does not exceed +/- 5 percent (example Obama) at all.

However there is still a need for a President avoiding servicing photos with a baseball bat, especially in today’s Middle East reality. Do not forget, even Hollywood is exhausted, there are only recreations of the former scenarios, 3D or 4D, “super heroes carnivals”. If the system collapse down, what will be the “coming soon” production?

Dr. Strangelove, the film coming soon?

The American establishment is well constructed, but it also leads us to infertility of the over-order. We clearly saw, over the past two decades, the President’s continuous decline in profile is contagious to the system and to other role players. Next film will be probably another classic movie; Dr. Strangelove, or “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (directed by Stanley Kubrick, the lead role of Peter Sellers, 1964).

Anyway, Hillary or Trump, they are the innkeepers, but we are the guests of the Dinner Game’s empty places.
